Who doesn’t like building with connecting blocks? LEGOs are a classic toy, loved by children and adults of all ages, so what better way to get kids motivated than by incorporating their favorite toy into alphabet learning! With this simple activity, kids will be able to practice a variety of skills, including:

Materials

For this activity, you’ll need:

I prepared the blocks by connecting them, adding coloring masking tape, and writing out the uppercase and lowercase letters.

Setup

To create this activity for my 3.5 year old, I started by gathering our LEGO DUPLO blocks (from all over the house! lol). Based upon what we had, I decided to use the taller blocks for uppercase letters and shorter blocks for lowercase letters. So that the blocks are self-correcting, I created pairs of the same color with one small and one tall block. Then I connected the like-color blocks to make a tall tower. Connecting them first makes it easier to apply the tape since you can add one long strip, and then cut them apart.

Once the letters were written on the blocks, I used my scissors to cut the tape at the break between each block. I put them into a tray for Nicholas (my 3.5 year old) and we got to work!

Nicholas was so excited to have a special “school” activity just for him. With his big brother getting a lot of the extra “school” attention these days, he was thrilled to have his own work.

He started matching uppercase to lowercase letters and connecting the blocks. Once connected, he moved them to a second tray for “finished” work. He worked at a pace and the order that made sense for him, slowly getting through the whole alphabet. His big brother couldn’t help but get involved and “help,” but I tried to let Nicholas do as much as he could on his own.

Once we got all of the uppercase letters matched with the lowercase letters, we put the letters in ABC order. We got the letter in order together by singing the ABC song and pointing to the letters as we sang. This is a great way to practice letter identification and one-to-one correspondence - and it was a lot of fun!
