Today we got outside for a little sight word fun! I wanted to incorporate some movement and play into our sight word practice, and this morning we had a few hours of nice spring weather. I knew we had to get outside and take advantage of it before the rain this afternoon, so we mixed some literacy practice into our outdoor play with Sight Word Hopscotch!
To create our game, I got out our favorite sidewalk chalk (so many great colors!) and got to work drawing our hopscotch board. I selected a few words that my 6 year old was working on and filled in the rest of the boxes with words that he already knows. I didn’t want to overwhelm him with too many challenges and wanted to make sure he was successful.
To add a little extra fun to the game, I timed him the first time he hopped through and then he tried to beat his time. He’s still getting the hang of hopscotch ;) and switching between hopping on one foot and jumping on two feet, but overall he had fun, we got outdoors, and we added a little extra dose of literacy to our day. Success!
When we play this game again, I’ll have him help me write some of the words since that additional kinesthetic piece will help him remember those words and commit them to his sight word vocabulary.
Hopscotch is easily adapted to work with other important skills. You can work on letter names or sounds, color words, number identification (change it up by counting by 5’s , 10’s, etc.), math facts, etc.
I hope you were able to get outside today!
